Thanks for staying up with us tonight, i'm cash matlock.

A slight increase in new covid-19 cases, today, in mississippi.

The mississippi state department of health reports 634 new cases and 20 deaths.

Eight of those fatalities occurred in the wcbi viewing area... hospital numbers continue to improve in the state.

802 people are hospitalized with confirmed or suspected coronavirus symptoms. 207 patients are in i.c.u.

In our area... lee and lafayette counties have the most new cases today with 34.

Itawamba is reporting 24 and oktibbeha county has 20.

Some of those cases are being reported on the state's college campuses now that students have returned for the fall semester.

Let's start by clarifying some terms that a lot of folks have been using interchangeably.

Quarantine is for folks who have been exposed to covid-19.

Isolation is for those with a confirmed case of the virus.

Courtney ann jackson explains how ole miss is handling those cases.

Ole miss currently has 290 active covid-19 cases.280 of those among students.

There are designated on- campus isolation and quarantine spaces.

29 students are in on-campus isolation and 57 of them in designated quarantine space.

Notice that means 251 of those who've tested positive are isolating off campus.

That same option is given to those quarantining.

"we advise our students to consult with their families about their options."

Anne lea, student: "that's not an option for some, i know people who live in new york and they can't go home you know."

But the on campus tally doesn't account for some who are quarantined temporarily.

"when three cases emerge within a group, such as a floor in a residence hall, then that is defined as an outbreak.

And when an outbreak occurs then everybody within the group needs to quarantine in place temporarily while we can conduct contact tracing."

The university's covid-19 dashboard also gives insight on how much space they have left on campus for isolation and quarantine needs.

They point out that it will constantly change as students roll off the list and others on.

But i asked..

"what's the contingency?"

"we are looking at a wide range of options.

So, we are talking with local hotels.

We have been doing that for a while.

We're talking with local apartment owners about space that might be available.

And that's one of the key measures that we're looking at to assess our ability to respond."

Any changes past that?

Well, they're looking at several factors.

"there's not any one indicator that we may need to take additional steps."

Mississippi state university is contracting with two hotels adjacent to the campus as their quarantine/isolati on housing.

Previously, cases surged following memorial day and the fourth of july.

Meantime, hot spots continue to emerge ...iowa is in the grip of coronavirus&on average, nearly 20 percent of tests are positive.

As schools struggle to return in person...in salinas, california - a snapshot of the digital divide of students left behind by covid: two little girls doing their schoolwork outside a taco bell -so they can get access to wifi.

After it went viral, strangers came to their rescue, raising more than 100-thousand dollars to help them and their mother, who are homeless.

Meg : "will every student have a device before you start all over next week?

"well, there are still arriving by truck daily.

" few places know the digital divide more than cleveland.

Last spring 40 percent of families didn't have access to high speed internet and two thirds didn't have a device to connect.

Superintendent eric gordon has been working all summer to put a device in every students hand.

That's an 18 million dollar investment that we did not plan for but had to happen.

But we're also working on a long term permanent solution to make the internet a utility and not a luxury, because i don't plan to be the superintendent that goes door to door collecting hot spots back once it's over and saying we're unplugging you again, we have to solve this problem permanently.

Cash 3 lottery gfx goes here oxford university, in partnership with astrazeneca, started dosing the first volunteers in florida on friday.

Cbs's dr. jon lapook spoke exclusively with the first american in the trial.

23-yr-old jacob serrano is the áfirstá volunteer to be dosed in the u-s with either the oxford- astrazeneca vaccine or a placebo.

He has lost ásevená family members to covid- 19 and says he wants to be part of the solution to save lives - no matter the cost.

I knew there was a risk because it's like - it's a trial, but i'd rather have us one step closer, no matter what it takes.

Serrano was dosed on friday at headlands jem research institute in lake worth, florida& the immune response is very encouraging.

Dr. larry bush is an infectious disease doctor and the lead principal investigator for this trial site.

He says he's optimistic this vaccine is effective.

In the phase one in two trials //, the // vaccine has been proven that not only do you get robust neutralizing antibodies to fight the coronavirus, you get a t cell response, another arm of the immune system // to fight off the cells that do become infected.

That's crucial in treating infections.

Oxford univeristy has been conducting phase three trials in the united kingdom, brazil, and south africa& in earlier phases, there was no evidence the vaccine causes serious reactions.

Headlands research says their focus is on enrolling members of the african- american and the latin-x community who have been disproportionatel y affected by the pandemic the numbers are pointing to those groups of people // becoming infected at a higher rate.//and therefore, that's a group that would highly benefit from vaccination.

Astrazeneca says astrazeneca says it plans to enroll up to 50 thousand participants globally, and is planning to start phase three trials in japan and russia.

The company expects to have late- stage trial results later this year.

We're home for all this time.

We're doing zoom meetings.

I applaud our coaches and the university for how they've handled this because there's so much uncertainty.

Whether that's what we're gonna play, are we gonna play, what's going on outside the world.

This entire social justice movement as well.

And an election year.

I think our coaches and staff have handled it really well as far as preparing us for the best opportunity to be able to play."
