The sheer number of deaths is teling enough.

And the federal government.

Any time someone dies behind the wheel it's a tragedy... but when it happens multiple times on the same road in the same year you wonder if it can be avoided.

We have continuing coverage on that pengra road crash from yesterday that claimed the life of one man.

Kezi 9 news reporter emma jerome was there today and spoke with neighbors about what they say makes it so dangerous --- and why they're demanding change.

Pengra, place, and jasper lowell roads... a trio of roads with a dangerous and deadly reputation.

Phoner "now someone has died -- and so maybe something can be done about this area where this continues to happen" the sheer number of wrecks is telling enough.

In december 2019 a 66 year old oakridge woman died after she veered off pengra road crashing into a tree -- her car bursting into flames.

Back in february a father and son died after a fiery wreck that ejected them from the vehicle on place and pengra road.

Earlier this month a family of five espcaped without injury after driving their car off jasper lowell road and into the willamette river.

And just yesterday a man was killed after smashing into another vehicle on place road.

Emma jerome "its devastating when someone loses their life behind the wheel.

It feels even more tragic when you wonder if it could have been prevented - and on a road where multiple people have died in the last*year?

Neighbors say it could have been" "there's no speed limit sign on our road and the kids are waiting for the buses and there's so much traffic and there's hidden turns" lcso saying in the last 5 years they've responded to at least 8 crashes where someone was either injured or dead.

And at the end of the day they're saying a huge factor is driver awareness... not letting your speed get away from you on the scenic winding roads.

Carrie carver: " you might not be realizing that you are going much faster than the posted speed limit and sometimes that posted speed limit is faster than you should be going" the roadway signing and pavement marking diviion of lane county public works has made changes with signage and road markings over the years, but neighbors don't think it goes far enough officials saying you will not get penalized for taking it slow around those parts -- unless you are so slow -- it seems drugs or alcohol could be an issue.
