C1 3 and louisiana are addressing the damage left behind from the storm..

Falling trees...killed at least 6 people...including a 14-year-old girl... homes have been leveled... entire businesses and neighborhoods underwater..

And a chlorine chemical plant even caught on fire..

This is the strongest storm... to hit the texas- louisiana border in a century..

##### oj becnel/homeowner: "extremely fortunate because we could have gone either way, so we're lucky, we're lucky, we're all right, very lucky."

As the storms move on, and people work to pick up the pieces... help is already there.

American red cross volunteers... from kentucky have been in louisiana since before the storm hit..

Setting up shelters and making sure everyone was getting out in time.

But this process, is different than times past...because of the pandemic.

We spoke with one volunteer from central kentucky...on what helping with recovery looks like..

It's new for you this morning.

#### 7:05-7:08 "this is my first large scale operation under covid."

David silver has been working with the american red cross..

Since 1960.

But he's only been working in sheltering for the last 7 years.

11:26-11:27 "it helps you sleep at night."

This time he's answered the call to help in louisiana with what was hurricane laura.

:58-1:07 "weve got thirty mile an hour winds, heavy rain, and technically we are not supposed to leave the building."

We spoke to him thursday at his hotel in shreveport before the storm hit the area.

He says the red cross is working wittwo hotels as shelters for those in need.

But it goes beyond a place to stay.

4:00 -4:18 "these people need food.

Not all of us can afford to go out to eat with o families everyday for ten days or whatever its just if the storm hits the restaurants arent open.

So its our job to give them sustance" and because of the pandemic..

The way they serve three meals a day, has changed.

6:10-6:32 "we have to be careful because we are trying to do within the protocals of covid.

We cant let them reach for the food, we have to give them the food push it out to them but once its theres we cant take it back.

It gets a bit hectic at times.

" silver says many multi-generational families have come to them for help.

And once the storm passes the job is to get them back into a safe and stable place to stay.

9:40-9:52 "its nice seeing people move along.

You know they may have lost everything but you're giving back.

Its what we're supposed to do" the american red cross relies on volunteers and donations to be able c1 3 to help people in their times of need.

We've put how you can help and where to
