3-year-old Russian child recovers after critical heart implant in Chennai

A 3-year-old Russian child has successfully recovered after a critical heart implant at the MGM healthcare hospital in Chennai.

The infant, Lev Fedorenko, had been bedridden for about a year and had already suffered two cardiac arrests.

The child had a condition called restrictive cardiomyopathy.

Doctors at the hospital realised that they could not manage his condition with just medicines and they decided to implant a mechanical support pump to help him recover.

However, getting the pump was a challenge as only the Berlin company produces pumps for infants.

Doctors contacted the company and managed to get the pump sent over from Germany even amid the Covid lockdown period.

They then conducted an online session where engineers from the Berlin company helped doctors place the two external heart pumps.

A seven hour long marathon surgery was performed and the boy has now recovered and is fit to be discharged.

The doctor at the hospital said that this case was a challenge for his entire team.

The medical team is now earning appreciation from several quarters.
