The carcass of a critically endangered whale washed ashore on the coast of West Bengal's East Midnapore district on Monday (June 29).

Footage shows the huge 36-feet-long whale washed up on the shore of Mandarmani Beach and beach-goers standing witness to the incident.

Although the cause of its death is not yet known, local sources revealed that the dead whale has "injury marks" over its tail and body.

Experts are now examining the carcass of the mammal to ascertain the reason for its death.

In India, whales are endangered species under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
