Open scott at chat set bobby live in monitor roll vo in monitor roughly a hundred people calling for the resignation of harry sanders this morning at the lowndes county courthouse// thanks for joining us at five.

This is look at the crowd this morning.

The lowndes county naacp hosted a gathering after the president of the board of supervisors in lowndes county is quoted saying remarks some say diminishes our black community// wcbi's bobby martinez joins us live outside the courthouse, bobby what are people saying today?

Scott, those who showed up today are hurt and say they're not going to stand for hate// speaking to lowndes county naacp president lavonne harris..

She says sanders comments were not only hurtful.

Also brought back dark memories of slavery... and says she is going to do all she can to push for sanders resignation.

"we done been down that history.

You don't know where slavery is about.

You have never been whooped, beaten had to get up been raped you know, beat, go to bed hungry he's not used to that.

And harry is living a good life but he don't understand he's living a good life off of slaves."

Harris also says sanders comments has put a hurt on reputation of columbus.... but this gathering also brought a mixture of races together this morning.

As chants of "harry sanders must go" echoed throughout the street.

And people i spoke to today of both white and black race are furious over sanders comments... "i just think it is important that as a white person i show that harry sanders does not speak for all of us.

We need to show support for black and brown people in our city and our country and tell them that they are not alone in this fight."

"they are very hurtful not only to the black community but the community as a whole.

I think it set us back into old ways of thinking that we need to get past not as a black community not as a white community but as a community whole."

And of course..

As soon as more details become available... we will make sure to pass that along to you..

For now, reporting in columbus, w-c-b-i news community members are concerned about the potential fallout from sanders' comments.

Earlier today, district 2 supervisor trip hairston called for harry sanders to step down as president of the board.

Hairston says the county cannot reach their goals while being lead by a president making those types of "reprehensive" comments.

He says he also fears for the economic impact those statements will have.

"the comments were uncalled for, inappropriate, and reprehensive.

We can and must do better.

I live here with my family by choice and plan to continue my efforts and continue to contribute to the well being of all citizens here in lowndes county."

"with corporations looking to relocate here or even locate here with various businesses, those type comments matter, and people take those to heart.

I am concerned about the economic impact of those statements."

Hairston voted "no" when the proposition of moving the confederate monument outside the lowndes county courthouse came before the board of supervisors on monday.

He says he's ready to reconsider that decision.

He also says he's in support of changing the state flag.

Negative views of mississippi are challenging for people who work to bring companies and jobs to the area.

In a statement today, joe max higgins, the ceo of the golden triangle development link says they are saddened and disappointed by sander's comments, which "cast a disturbing and negative shadow on our community."

The statement refers to sanders as a quote "partner who has contributed to the growth of our region."

End quote the letter from the link goes on to say that "economic development is about creating opportunity, and to us, that means opportunity for everyone.

" higgins writes, it is the job of the link to move mississippi forward, a direction that quote "leaves no room for such antiquated and abhorrent beliefs as those expressed by supervisor sanders.

End quote the entire link statement is available on our website at wcbi.com off top area economic development leaders say now is the time to change the state flag and they want the legislature and governor to take action.

The golden triangle development link executive committee issued a resolution to lawmakers yesterday.

In part, it says "our state flag does not assist our organization and our communities to attract and grow business and industry."

The resolution also says "the confederate battle emblem on our state flag serves as a visual representation of our state's divisive history."

The chance for a bill to come out of the state senate for changing the flag appears unlikely// mississippi today is reporting that lt.

Governor delbert hosemann assigned the resolution to suspend the rules for lawmakers to consider changing the state flag to the senate constitution committee// the online publication says the chairman of the committee, republican chris johnson of hattiesburg, does not plan to call up the resolution for consideration.
