Memorial day weekend is taking on an even greater significance in terre haute.

A police and patriot guard escort brought u-s army sergeant christopher curry back home.

The soldier from terre haute died in iraq nearly 3-weeks ago.

"every memorial day from now on, they gonna remember that their son came home on memorial day that he paid the sacrifice of his life for our freedom."

People lined the streets -- holding flags -- all to pay respect to a fallen soldier.

In tonight's top story... she brings us more on how the community is showing to a grieving family.

Under dark skies... terre haute police..indiana state police and the indiana patriot guard escorted u-s army sergeant christopher curry home.

"the curry family was there and very appreciative of what we've done.

It's been a great honor bringing their son home."

Nearly 100 riders with the indiana patriot guard led the escort from the indianapolis international airport on saturday.

(nat sound) callaghan and hughes funeral home in terre haute was the final destination.

Community members gathered in support and mourning.

Navy veteran rick voll (v-all) says it's his patriotic duty to welcome sergeant curry back home.

"he gave his life so we could be free, you know.

So we should all be thankful that there's men and women still wanting to serve our country and defend our country."

It's a solemn homecoming for the fallen soldier.

Sergeant curry was a 20-14 graduate of terre haute north vigo high school.

He was only 23-years-old.

Dyer says a family lost more than just a son.

"probably he would have had a wife or a girlfriend.

Possibly he could have had kids.

None of that's going to happen now in that family.

That family lost a whole limb to their family tree."

Dyer encourages the community to remember sergeant curry and all those who serve our country.

"reflect what it means to this family and all the families and the veterans that have passed on before and history so we could have the freedoms that we have today."
