Mississippi leaders are ramping up the response to the coronavirus outbreak.

Thank you for staying up with us tonight..

In a briefing 2 days ago governor tate reeves described what he called a resource constrained environment for dealing with the epidemic..

Now - some mississippi companies are stepping in to fill the gaps.

And as courtney ann jackson explains that has the state taking a more aggressive approach.

The call to social distance is to slow to spread of the virus but state officials say the new plan implemented by the department of health will help us get ahead of it.

"i believe will allow us to shift from playing defense to playing offense so that we can deal with the challenges that come before us in the days and weeks ahead."

"i want you to see a lot more cases next week because we're finding them."

When it comes to finding those cases---the new plan is more aggressive not only with testing but what happens after those results.

One of those being mandating those who test positive to stay home.

"we'll do a one on one visit, issue, in a nice way, an isolation order so people understand.

And people are usually very receptive to it.

And there are clear legal implications of fines and even imprisonment if there's lack of compliance."

And also doing a more thorough job of finding all the others they may have potentially infected.

"so that we then identify that second tier of individuals that are likely to be the next generation of infection."

The health department will also do more investigations into outbreaks.

"if you look at what drives disease transmission, especially with populations that are most vulnerable...simila r to what we saw...the amount o, it's going to be when disease gets into a nursing home or maybe you have a disease transmission within a funeral."

Finally---they'll use the data breakdowns to focus on community outbreak response---knowin g some cities and counties have different levels of resources available.

And some may need to take more steps than just social distancing.

"should the public health experts make a determination that there is a region or a county or a city that needs a shelter in place order, i am prepared to enter it."

Officials add they don't want mississippians to let their guard down with precautions.

They say the outbreak is just ramping up.

An executive order from governor reeves earlier this week has been causing some confusion for local governments and has local businesses trying to balance the desire to follow the law, and the desire to keep their doors open..

Allie martin has more.

As dr kris whitehead placed his to go order at bulldog burger, he was practicing cdc guidelines we're all familiar with.

"making sure to stay at least six feet away from anyone, wash hands for at least twenty seconds, after touching anything, a doorknob, pen, what not, excited to be out, see some sunshine and interact in the community the best i can."

Keeping the public safe and helping stop the spread of the coronavirus has led to executive orders from mayors around the state.

This past weekend, tupelo mayor jason shelton issued a shelter in place order, and also closed dining areas inside restaurants.

But on tuesday, governor tate reeves issued an executive order, banning any gathering of ten or more people.

His order also closed all restaurant dining rooms, unless capacity is limited to a maximum of ten people.

"if city of tupelo tries to enforce something beyond the governor's order, it's invalid, we have to folow the governor's order, i'm optimistic the governor, or his office will issue a clarification."

Although mayor shelton claims the governor's order supercedes the city's, the owner of the "eat with us' group, which includes bulldog burger, says his restaurants will continue offering only curbside, to go or drive through for the time being.

In fact, bernard bean says his restaurants closed their dining rooms before mayor shelton issued his citywide mandate and business has taken a big hit.

"our sales are down 75 to 80 percent right now, so it is obviously affecting our employees, unfortunately we had to lay some off, vendors, it's a trickle down effect, all of our suppliers, and service people, it's a huge impact on the economy."

Standup close bean says while there is confusion over the executive orders, what they mean and which ones to follow, he is hopeful proactive measures by the public, business owners and government leaders will help flatten the curve over the next couple of weeks.

In tupelo, allie martin, wcbi news gfx off top late this afternoon the governor's office issued a supplement to his executive order which reads in part - we have established a statewide standard of social distancing and defining essential businesses to slow the spread.

It goes on to say that - no measures can be adopted that are álessá restrictive than the executive order, and any existing local measures can remain in effect as long as they provide the same áminimum á standards established in the executive order".
