Midmorning With Aundrea - February 24, 2020 (Part 1) [ENCORE PRESENATION]

(Part 1 of 2.

Originally aired February 19, 2020) Pediatrician Dr. Keith Watson joins us to share what you need to know about the Coronavirus.

And a new high intensity exercise class believes in the value of working out in cold temperatures.

Here on cbs and should you be worried about the coronavirus?

Dr. watson is here to talk about it.

Plus, a baby shower and a wedding.

Midmorning starts right now.

The coronavirus remains active around the world.

Some americans remain in quarantine after traveling overseas.

But what do you need to know about the respiratory illness?

Dr. keith watson is here this morning with the facts.

Andrew raborn >> like that makes a line of headlines no matter how are you is a concern for the stars you with what exactly is called as i said today i was going to explain this i think i have it so coronavirus is not in and of itself one thing coronavirus is a family of viruses there is dozens maybe more so in an analogy used saying coronavirus is like saying chevrolet okay you there's chevrolet name and there's makes and models coronavirus is a specific type of virus family in the coronavirus family there again dozens of these viruses so strains don't even affect humans as some do so more simple runny nose and cough and some are little more severe this particular one is what is called a novel virus okay in that it's a new strain of this never been discovered before searching here on the news them talking about this coronavirus being a novel virus is all that means in this new strain affects humans on the days it spread among humans is spread just like every other virus person- to-person contact airborne drink after someone sneeze washing hands rubbing your eyes those kinds of things and you can contract highs in the same way you could get a stomach virus or the flu okay coronavirus symptoms and on duty many symptoms of other viruses from a general standpoint yes fever congestion not feeling well breathing problems simple simple way as we say in the medical world nonspecific symptoms and cough runny nose i don't feel good so for someone to be misdiagnosed in the early past is any test you to write to me there would be a way to test and identify the coronavirus scientists-we know what it is and what it is and how is there any reason for me in columbus mississippi, mississippi tupelo mississippi webster county to be worried about coronavirus theoretically it can do here at the beginning spread person- to-person by you would have to travel to or be exposed to someone from the region in china as you're seeing on the news where it has originated and where most of the cases are uses lower seeing say americans who were there being flown in quarantine for certain amount of time correct because because it is a novel virus a new virus no one knows how long it takes for symptoms to show us is that they don't know if two days later if you're still feeling good whether you've been asked got it or not it may be something that takes two weeks to show up so they're keeping people that have been exposed quarantine until you are absolutely certain that they don't have it that way it doesn't continue to press using is a new strains of the to know that there are no there is no vaccine just like most viruses there's no specific treatment of the treatment i received the control fluids and rest and see your daughter during future.

Your feeling poorly see as anyone in your office with that settlement is defined as someone who test positive for coronavirus anything you said you would be very sad that the answer is a don't think anybody truly knows from what i have gathered if you are a long healthy person with no other medical problems the odds are you may be sick like the flu recovery appears to be the norm as with most viruses so the extremely young the extremely old or anybody with a medical condition whether immune system is compromised in when we come back, someone or something is tracking your every movement.

The trail of a digital footprint next on mid morning.

Ou our winter has been wet instead of cold.

And that drives most exercise routines indoors.

But would you ever try a workout in frigid temperatures?

A new exercise class is promoting the idea of burning calories in the cold.

Michael george reports.

Princess sutherland is ánotá a cold weather person.

But despite that, she's trying something new- a workout class where the thermostat is set to a chilly 50 degrees.

"it was out of m comfort zone, i said let me try that."

It's high-intensity& nats in low temperatures.

Nats nice job the class is called "brrrn"- with emphasis on the "brrr" nats "good, tw more, inhale, reach up" the theory is that working out in the cold is more refreshing, and can help you burn more calories, says co-founder jimmy t.

Martin.

"our whole thesi is that we want you to sustain a higher intensity for a longer period of time and cooler temperatures do that for you."

Instructors say the frigid temperatures also trigger the body's metabolism to keep you warm.

Nats 3 , 2 "so if you don' have a class like this in your neighborhood, there are still some ways you can get all the benefits of a cold weather workout."

"you can go fo what we call a shiver walk, so like, dress with light layers, go for a walk around your block, do some calisthenics."

After her first try, princess says she's convinced.

Proof that you don't need to be warm to work up a sweat.

Experts say exercising outside in cooler weather can also boost your mood and immunity during cold and flu season.

What we do on the internet is far from anonymous.

Many of the sites we visit and apps we use share our info.

Now you can find out which ones.

Elise preston reports.

Little girl: "who i that" hacker: "i'm you best friend, i'm santa claus" ring cameras made headlines recently after hackers were able to access some of the indoor devices..

And even talk through them.

Stranger: "he homie, i still see you" now a new report is questioning the company's use of its customers' data.

The electronic frontier foundation looked at ring's app for android devices and found it shares info with several marketing and analytics company.

What you're clicking on the app, how long you're using it for.

But also what kind of device you're on, what sort of wifi you're using to connect through the app the group also says facebook is alerted when a user opens the ring app.

In a statement ring says "lik many companies, ring uses third- party service providers to evaluate the use of our mobile app, which helps us improve features, optimize the customer experience, and evaluate the effectiveness of our marketing."

Cnet senior reporter alfred ng says ring is far from alone, many popular apps share data with third parties including facebook.

"facebook has it hands in a lot of the internet."

If you want to see how much..

Facebook has added a feature called "of facebook activity."

There you can see all the apps and websites that are sharing your activity with facebook.

You can also hit this button to turn off future activity.

"now, that doesn' mean that, you know, facebook is no longer tracking your activity off websites, it's just not tied to your identity on facebook anymore."

Ing says apps and websites tracking our habits have become an industry standard that's likely here to stay.

When three women came up with a business idea, no one expected how it might changes lives and the way some people are viewing alcohol.

That story is next on mid morning.

Am among the liquors of the world, mezcal is having a moment.

Many americans have tried tequila..

But maybe not this, smokier cousin.

Mezcal is steadily gaing a loyal fan base.

And some are sipping a new brand -- created by three women who decided they could shake up the liquor scene..

While empowering women on both sides of the border.

Adriana diaz reports.

On a sunbathed hilltop in central los angeles... ....sits a picturesque home turned headquarters for three friends who became business partners... nats/ ...over a shared philosophy... //if you are strong, you need something strong.

So strong women, strong drink.

Nat for singer lykke li , gina correll aglietti, and yola jimenez... that strong drink has long been yola's family recipe of mezcal - a mexican spirit known for its smokey flavor.

They say it filled a void in the already crowded liquor industry.

So they bottled it..and yola mezcal was born.

// everything in the market was steered toward partying or the guy after his hard day of work in his big leather chair with his big watch.

You know?

And it was sort of like all of our friends and all of our generation are wearing the pants.

They're the breadwinners of their homes.

They have to work.

And we want to have our big glass of something strong at the end of the day, you know?

// for you, this is deeply personal.

This is a family recipe, a family tradition.

// this is where i come from.

Their recipe was developed in part by yola's grandfather back in 1971.

When he died and i wanted to take over the farm// you could see the women working everywhere but you would have to talk to a man to make the final decisions.

It was of course infuriating.

So from the beginning, i kept telling gina and lykke-- about how-- women in oaxaca were doing everything // we went together to the farm and said, "what we shoul focus on is having a brand that's for them, done by them that's when the freinds decided their mezcal would have a message: support the women who make it in mexico by paying them directly.

Nat - montage of women from farm saying their names in handout?

So this is of course about a great product from oaxaca, which is the mezcal.

But it's mostly about what is it that we can do that can change a little bit, a little bit the world you may not have heard of mezcal but it's been slowly seeping into cocktails at trendy bars for years..

Mezcal can be made by distilling more than 30 varieties of the pineapple looking plant, agave.

Tequila is actually a type of mezcal, made only from blue agave.

But unlike most tequila, typical mezcal is often made by hand and in small batches // it always had the connotation of being a poor indigenous drink // and it was only until people were-- becoming interested in organic products-- things were-- done locally and with a rich tradition that mezcal sort of become famous in mexico, all over, outside of oaxaca and these s-- states.

And then you had an explosion "an explosion" how swedish music star lykke li might describe her first sip of mezcal well, i had almost a religious experience too, when i tour, i'm always looking to-- like, you need a little bit of something to get going.

And i was a huge whisky fan, but i would lose my voice every night.

So when i drank mezcal, you get this high but there's no come down.

To combine her passions, and help spread the brand's message, she led the launch of yola dia&.

...an all-female music festival that raises money for organizations like the a-c-l-u and an l- a women's center.

Using music to promote female empowerment was a natural next step.

// even in all the music festivals or all the shows, like, the female headliners are so few.

And all the people working behind the stage and in production, all of that, is male.

So then we decided that it was a good idea to do it, to only have female headliners, players, security guards, production.

Talent on all sides in the food, everything.

The festival sold out..and another is planned for this summer they might make it look easy, with their stylized branding and laser focused misson - but starting a liquor company with no industry experience was tough men in the industry were a little bit averse to us in the beginning.

Everyone's like, "oh no, no, no women need something lighter they're not as, you know, sturdy as a man."

That's no true.

We can handle ourselves // so i have a dirty little secret.

Okay.

I don't love mezcal.

Okay.

Well, we're gonna get started right now.

Nat/ at bar we waited until we got to the bar, aptly named "ba restaurant," fo the taste test - no pressure.

Okay.

Do people drink just mezcal neat?

It's the best way.

The fastest way to heaven.

Okay.

Cheers-- --little one in the beginning, just a kiss?

Oh, that is good.

It's not as smoky as i'm used to.

// // how do you feel adriana?

I felt good with you guys before, but i feel even better now-- and with every pour, there's a larger purpose...improve lives in mexico, one drink at a time.

Yeah.

So, what do you think your grandfather would think if he could taste this?

I think he would be-- he-he would be-- --ecstatic.

I-- all his life what he wanted to do was try to make a difference in oaxaca.

// so i think-- i hope from wherever he is, he's lookin' at this moment and he's smiling.

So.

Salud.

Salud.

For cbs this morning saturday, adriana diaz, los angele still to come - its a one stop wedding venue - right near the drink machine.

Love..

What can you say?
