Woman shot dead after gunman opens fire in busy Bangkok shopping mall

One woman was shot dead and another injured after a gunman opened fire in a shopping mall in Bangkok on Tuesday (February 18).

The mother-of-one (named locally as Khuntai Chatthai, 28) was working as a receptionist at a dental clinic when the killer stormed into the building in the centre of the Thai capital and shot her.

The young woman collapsed in a pool of blood before paramedics rushed to the Century Plaza building and tried to revive her just after 3 p.m.

Local time.

A second person was injured and taken to hospital, where they are understood to be stable.

Witnesses said there were at least seven gun shots.

The gunman - who fled from the scene - is believed to have already known Khuntai and police are not treating it as a mass shooting.

Officers said the gunman is believed to be the ex-husband of the victim.

Police Major General Samroeng Suanthong said: "The shooting seems to have been caused by the delusional jealousy of the gunman towards the dead person, who was his ex wife.

This case is not that complicated, there are no other suspects or motives.'' Speaking today, a worker from the building said ''everybody panicked'' when they heard shots.

They added: ''I was on the same floor as the shooting and I heard screaming.

There was a lot of panic, everybody was running away and did not know what to do.

''It's scary, I don't feel safe.'' Officers raced to the Century Plaza building in the centre of the Thai capital, near to the city's well-known Victory monument.

Footage shows officers in brown uniforms walking through the building.

The gunman is still believed to be at large.

The shooting comes just over a week after a soldier opened fire at a shopping mall in Nakhon Ratchasima killing 30 people and injuring 60 others on February 8.
