Indonesians in West Sumatra's Padang took part in a bizarre hour-long scramble for sugar on Saturday (January 25), part of an Islamic tradition unique to the city, locals say.

Video shows men on a roof of a mosque tossing small sacks of sugar to hundreds of locals - men, women and children - competing with each other at ground level below.

The sugar is a donation from Indonesians of Indian descent, with some believing it brings blessings.

The festival is known as Serak Gulo to locals.
