Goody the turtle lost her left flipper years ago in Thailand - but now she's swimming properly again, thanks to a specially-designed prosthetic flipper.

Lauren Anthony reports.

Goody the sea turtle lost her flipper years ago after getting entangled in a fishing net.

It left her largely immobile and highly stressed in captivity.

But - thanks to science - she can finally swim again with ease having received Thailand's first prosthetic flipper for turtles.

The vets who look after her say its given her a new lease of life.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) VETERINARIAN, NANTRIKA CHANSUE, SAYING: "She is swimming much better and she is learning to use the two flippers to turn.

You can see the difference.

She knows that now she can turn right by using that flipper." Over the past year, Thai environment authorities and researchers in Bangkok have worked to develop prostheses for injured sea turtles.

The endangered animals are often victims of human activities like ingesting too much plastic, getting caught in fishing gear, and getting struck by boat propellers.

10 other turtles like Goody are in the program, and their hopes of swimming properly lie in the success of the project.

Although the prosthetics won't help injured turtles return to the wild they are aimed at improving their quality of life in captivity - and allowing them to swim with confidence once again.
