Turkey's Erdogan says to send troops to Libya

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan announced on Thursday (Decedmber 26) Turkey will send troops to Libya now that Tripoli has requested it.

He will present legislation to parliament in January for deployment to the north African country.

Ankara signed two separate accords a month ago with Libya's internationally recognized government of Fayez al-Serraj, one on security and military cooperation and another on maritime boundaries in the eastern Mediterranean.

(SOUNDBITE) (Turkish) TURKISH PRESIDENT, TAYYIP ERDOGAN, SAYING: "Turkey signs a (maritime) agreement (with Libya) on the one hand.

On the other, we sign a military cooperation agreement (with them).

Hopefully, this agreement will pass from our parliament around January 8 - 9 and we will accept the invitation (to send troops to Libya).

This is the reason we are holding all these meetings.

They are helping a warlord.

We are standing by the legitimate government of the country and accept their invitation.

This is our difference." However, it was unclear what specific invitation Erdogan was referring to.

The interior minister in the Tripoli-based government on Thursday suggested no official request had yet been made.

The Government of National Accord (GNA) has been fending off a months-long offensive by Khalifa Haftar's forces in eastern Libya, which have received support from Russia, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates.

However, Moscow has voiced concerns over a possible Turkish military deployment to Libya.
