Judge orders Trump pay $2 mln in Foundation settlement

A judge on Thursday ruled President Donald Trump and his family must pay $2 million dollars to charities as part of a settlement in a lawsuit against his personal foundation brought by New York State.

Zachary Goelman reports.

A judge on Thursday ruled President Donald Trump and his family must pay $2 million dollars to an array of charities to settle a lawsuit against his personal foundation brought by New York State.

The lawsuit accused Trump and his children, Don Jr., Ivanka, and Eric, of using the Trump Foundation, as “little more than a checkbook to serve Mr. Trump's business and political interests." New York's attorney general said a 21-month probe uncovered “extensive unlawful political coordination” between the foundation and Trump’s campaign.

Among the allegations: that $2.8 million the foundation collected for veterans at a 2016 Iowa fundraiser was used or disbursed by Trump's campaign staff.

The lawsuit also alleged $100,000 of foundation funds were used to settle a dispute involving the Trump Organization’s Mar-a-Lago resort, and $10,000 the foundation paid for a portrait of Trump that was later hung at one of his golf clubs.

When the lawsuit was first filed in June last year, Trump tweeted, "I won't settle this case!" Six months later the Trump family agreed to settle the lawsuit and dissolve the foundation under court supervision.

As part of the deal, the Trumps are prohibited from serving on the boards of other non-profit entities unless they meert certain conditions.
