Kipchoge breaks two hour marathon barrier

Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge made athletics history on Saturday when he became the first person to run a marathon in under two hours, stretching the limits of human endeavor and passing a milestone few thought could be reached for decades if at all.

Francesca Lynagh reports.

Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge made athletics history on Saturday (October 12) when he became the first person to run a marathon in under two hours.

The Olympic marathon champion and world record holder completed the Vienna run in one hour 59 minutes and 40 seconds.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) ELIUD KIPCHOGE SAYING: "I'm the happiest man to run under two hours in order to inspire many people, to tell people that no human is limited, you can do it.

I'm expecting more athletes all over the world to run under two hours after today." Kipchoge's remarkable effort will not be recognized by the sport's governing body because it was not an open competition and used in and out pacemakers.
