A microscopic, single-celled amoeba that can destroy the brain of its victims has reared its ugly head in Florida. According to CNN, a Florida Department of Health on Friday announced the confirmed case of Naegleria fowleri. The DOH official said infections from Naegleria fowleri are usually fatal. In the US, there have been 143 known cases. Only four have survived. Naegleria fowleri is typically found in warm freshwater like lakes, rivers and ponds. It enters the body through the nasal passages. Also, victims may possibly be exposed to the amoeba through a neti pot when rinsing congested sinuses.

An off-duty police officer in Del City, Oklahoma, opened fire on a Walmart customer who allegedly shoplifted. Newser reports the Langston University cop struggled with the suspect, who appeared to have stolen a BBQ grill. As the suspect began to back up his vehicle, the officer drew his firearm and shot off at least eleven rounds. The shoplifting suspect was said to be hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries and is in stable condition.
A young woman is dead after being hit by a man who drove his car onto a closed Seattle freeway and into a crowd protesting police brutality. Summer Taylor, 24, of Seattle, died Saturday evening at Harborview Medical Center. According to Newser, Dawit Kelete also hit 32-year-old Diaz Love, of Portland, Oregon, in the incident. Kelete hit both of them when his car barreled through a panicked crowd of protesters on Interstate 5 early Saturday morning.
