Prosecutors charge former Audi CEO over his role in emissions scandal

German prosecutors said on Wednesday they had filed charges against former Audi Chief Executive Rupert Stadler, who is being investigated over his role in Volkswagen's emissions test cheating scandal.

Emer McCarthy reports.

Prosecutors in Germany say they've filed charges against former Audi boss Rupert Stadler over his role in the Volkswagen emissions scandal.

Volkswagen admitted in 2015 to having used illegal engine-control software to cheat pollution tests.

That triggered a global backlash against diesel.

The public prosecutor's office in Munich said Stadler and three other defendants are being charged with fraud, false certification and criminal advertising practices.

(SOUNDBITE) (German) MUNICH SENIOR PUBLIC PROSECUTOR, ANDREA MAYER, SAYING: "Mr. Stadler is accused of receiving information about the manipulations in September 2015 and not preventing the sale of affected vehicles thereafter." His lawyer says he denies any wrongdoing.

Stadler was arrested in June last year as part of a broader probe into emissions-cheating at the company and spent several months in prison.

The affair has so far cost the carmaker $33.5 billion.
