ROUGH CUT (no reporter narration) STORY: New York State has voted to end religious exemptions from school vaccination rules, amid a measles outbreak that has sickened hundreds of people.

The bill was signed into law on Thursday (June 13) after a heated debate by lawmakers.

The Senate voted 36-26 in favor, with the assembly following suit with a 77-53 vote.

Democratic Senator David Carlucci, who represents the hard hit Rockland/Winchester constituency, supports the bill.

He says "now is the time to act," as there are more than 800 cases of the measles in the State.

But several people came to voice their opposition on religious grounds.

"The government doesn't have the right to interfere with my personal religious beliefs," said one woman.

"We will not vaccinate.

What's gonna happen is we will either home school or we will move out of state." More than 1,000 cases of measles have been confirmed this year in 28 states.

It's the highest number reported since 1992.
