Gun Violence Discussion

Good evening at 11:00 im jason powles.

June is gun violence awareness month... and in light of the recent spike in violence over the past few months, community members met today to discuss the solutions for the gun violence in utica... news channel 2's caitlin irla was there and is live in the studio with more.

Caitlin... jason... awareness and solutions to stop the gun violence in the city.... those were two main things community leaders and local activists spoke about at the empowerment center on james street tonight... patrick johnson, the director of the save our streets program, organized this meeting to raise awareness and to show the community that they can find solutions.

And after the two most recent shootings that happened last weekend, one of dudley ave and the other on wiley street....johnson says the time to find solutions is now.

Johnson was joined by freddie hamilton who is the newest member of the utica common council, members of the street team, and utica residents.

Everyone who came out to speak all have one question in mind... when will the violence stop.

I spoke with hamilton and she says members of the community are already working on solutions... "i've been meeting with community members... make this change it must happen.

" tomorrow night, there will be another meeting at the empowerment center.

Mayor palmieri is expected to be there to address his plans for the city regarding the gun violence.

That meeting will be from 6 to 8' oclock.
