'Your time is up', German far-right candidate tells centrists

ROUGH CUT.

NO REPORTER NARRATION.

The far-right Alternative for Germany's (AfD) lead candidate in the European parliament election warned politicians from major centre-right and centre-left European parties on Friday (May 24) 'your time is up'.

Addressing supporters at a final election rally in Frankfurt, Joerg Meuthen said politicians like European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and German Chancellor Angela Merkel had driven the EU to ruin, and that the time for populist eurosceptic parties like the AfD was "just beginning".

Meuthen refused to distance the AfD from Austria's far-right Freedom Party (FPO), which crashed out of government this week after a secretly filmed video emerged apparently showing its leader discussing fixing state contracts and how to circumvent party financing laws.

Outside the venue, protesters gathered to heckle politicians and supporters as they entered.

Far-right parties like the AfD are expected to make gains in the May 23-26 election.
