lpd family swearing in

3 this evening nine officers retired from the lafayette police department as five new ones got their badges.i met one of lpd's newest members who says becoming an officer here --- was in his blood.

3<nats of swearing in.as some careers began.nats.others came to an end.cody fultz: "i think this was always the plan i don't think i really had a choice, it was kind of like my purpose, my calling."

Gary bennett: "as he progressed through high school, he told me he was bound and determined to be a law enforcement officer."

Cody fultz and his grandfather gary bennett always sort of knew this day would come.cody fultz:"it's awesome to have family all here locally and to be able to protect and serve them."

But there was something fultz didn't know about his swearing in ceremony.cody fultz: "it was just a surprise that they were up there with the chief to present the badge."

Fultz's badge was handed to him by his grandfather and his aunt.both of whom were lpd officers --- bennett for 30 and his sister for 32 years.gary bennett: "i didn't try to encourage him, but i didn't try to talk him out of it either."

Looking back, bennett realizes it didn't really matter what he said.something about his family's law enforcement history just resonated with fultz.cody fultz: "to be able to follow in their footsteps and be the next generation and kind of help build something here in lafayette and help the community, it's ...i mean it's just surreal."

Passing the torch on to his grandson is surreal for bennett too.gary bennett: "things are a little different forty years ago when i started."

But he says the core values of police work will never change.gary bennett: " i told him to respect others, always."

And it seems fultz is already catching on.cody fultz: "just treat people the way you always want to be treated."

> 3 a few current lpd officers were also awarded tonight for their work and service in the community.
