Spotify files antitrust complaint against Apple

Spotify has lodged a complaint with European Union antitrust regulators over the 30 percent commission that Apple takes from third-party developers' revenue on its app store.

It follows a similar lawsuit brought to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Matthew Larotonda reports.

Spotify files antitrust complaint against Apple

Another antitrust complaint has been lodged against Apple: this time from Spotify.

The music streaming service has gone to European Union regulators over restrictions Apple places on third party software developers, like Spotify, that want to put their apps on Apple devices.

Spotify has several problems with Apple but their biggest issue is the 30 percent cut Apple generally takes from purchases made through those third-party apps.

In other words: if you spend $1 through an app for your iPhone, its developer takes 70 cents and Apple takes the rest.

Spotify and other developers have long complained that they then have to pass that extra cost back to consumers.

The only way around it, they say, is to not offer in-app purchases in the first place or force consumers to buy things through another method, like their laptop.

Spotify's lawyers argue that in their case, it means that Apple's own streaming service, Apple Music, is given an unfair advantage.

The U.S. Supreme Court heard similar arguments against Apple last November.

The court is expected to reach a decision by June.
