New woes for Huawei as two held on spy charges

Deeper trouble Friday for Huawei.

Poland has arrested two people on spying charges, one an employee of the Chinese mobile-phone maker.

The arrests come after Canada detained a top Huawei executive in December.

Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou was seized at Washington's request.

U.S. investigators suspect the firm violated U.S. trade sanctions on Iran.

The new arrests reportedly involve one Chinese employee of Huawei, and a Polish national working for a local telecoms firm.

TV reports say Huawei's Warsaw offices were also searched.

U.S. intelligence agencies suspect Huawei of cooperating with Chinese spies.

They say the company's gear may feature so-called 'back doors', designed to allow access for Chinese operatives.

That after Beijing passed a law in 2017 requiring Chinese firms to cooperate with the country's intelligence agencies.

The company is all but locked out of the U.S. market, while Australia and New Zealand have banned it from building new phone networks.

No evidence has been produced publicly to support the U.S. claims, and Huawei strongly denies the allegations.

On Friday, China's foreign ministry said it was 'deeply concerned' by the Polish arrests.

Huawei didn't comment.
