national walkout day

Students from coast to coast walked out of their schools this morning to honor the 17 victims gunned down in parkland florida one month ago.

This is air44 video from evansville's reitz high school where more than 100 students took part in the national movement.

Good evening, welcome to 44 news at 6 - i'm chris cerenelli.

And i'm amanda decker.

Here in the tri-state students from evsc schools walked out - in support of students who have been killed in shooting incidents at schools nationwide.

44news reporter melanie zayas was with evansville north high school students - when they walked out today.

Melanie?

Yes amanda and chris it was a very silent and peaceful movement at north high school in evansville early this morning.

E-v-s-c students had the chance to partake in the walkout - while also keeping victims from the marshall county high school shooting in mind.

Students at reitz joined students around the nation - and walked out of school today.

And so did students at north high school.

They spent 17 minutes outside - in honor of the 17 lives lost at a school in parkland florida last month.

The national walk out day protest was organized by the same group behind the women's march - calling on congress to pass tighter and tougher federal gun laws.

"students at north high school are joining with thousands of students across the country in honor of the seventeen lives that were taken at the parkland shooting just one month ago."

"we all were just remembering and thinking how lucky we were that we haven't been affected by it here and just hoping that we're making a difference in stopping it from happening anywhere else as well."

Each school in the evsc district took a different approach to express how national walkokokoutas important to students.

"we had some schools that were taking the opportunity to honor specifically the victims in florida so the seventeen victims reading names reading short biographies, having brief moments of silence for them."

Students at north high school took the national walkout day a step further by creating orange t shirts - with the word "uni".

"our design came from the fact that we wanted a slogan on the front to just make a statement and we thought unify was the best way to go about that it just kinda shows that the whole reason behind this is to stay unified."

Students at north raised 500 dollars with the shirts and all proceeds will go to marshall county high school in kentucky.
