All U.S. troops withdrawing from Syria expected to go to Iraq: Pentagon chief
Sunday, 20 October 2019 U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper said on Saturday that all of the nearly 1,000 troops withdrawing from northern Syria are expected to move to western Iraq to continue the campaign against Islamic State militants and "to help defend Iraq."
U.S. troops crossed into Iraq early on Monday, part of a withdrawal from northeastern Syria ordered by President Donald Trump that opened the way for Turkish troops to launch an offensive against Kurdish fighters in the area. Francesca Lynagh reports.
Turkish authorities have ordered the arrest of 82 people including members of a pro-Kurdish opposition party. The warrants are in relation to violent protests from 2014 against the siege by Islamic State of the Syrian Kurdish town of Kobani. Adam Reed reports
