What a week it’s been – you never know quite what’s going to happen as the days go by, and while some of this week’s events have been well-signposted, some have really taken us by surprise. In case you missed out on some of the big news this past seven days has brought us, here’s our weekly brief on the week that was, heading into mid-June.
Trump Meets Kim – At Last!
In what appeared to be a very positive meeting between two figureheads who were at verbal loggerheads only a year ago, US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un appeared to let bygones be bygones as they sat down to discuss the issues that mattered to their nations the most. Trump advised that military action would cease in South Korea – while Kim stated denuclearization will be followed in Pyongyang. Quite what the balance of power will be here long-term, it’s hard to say – but it was a big win indeed for North Korea, and perhaps even a PR win for Trump (despite a few awkward moments that have gained meme status!).

Disney Gets Outbid for Fox
Disney had famously bid around $52.4 billion in stock for 20th Century Fox at the end of last year – and now, it seems that Comcast, owners of NBCUniversal, are set to throw a massive spanner in the works with a $65 billion cash-only offer – meaning that Fox shareholders will now have to vote, in July, on whether or not to let the brand usurp Walt Disney Co for the spoils. It’s a very big game being played – and one the business world is keeping its eyes on.

The World Cup Begins
It’s perhaps one of the most controversial tournaments of recent years given Russia’s place in international press over the past few months – but the country put aside such moments to welcome soccer stars from all over the globe to begin playing for Jules Remaine, the most coveted international trophy in the sport. Big hitters such as Italy failed to qualify this time around – will France, Germany, Portugal or Spain take the trophy home? Some predict Belgium may even have a chance – while plenty of England fans are instead predicting how far they’ll make it out of the group stages – spare a thought!
