Highly contagious norovirus shuts down 46 Colorado schools
Friday, 22 November 2019 Tens of thousands of students in Colorado are not allowed to go back to school until next month, as a highly-contagious virus spreads. It shut down an entire school district in the Grand Junction area, southwest of Denver, and forced a major cleaning effort. Omar Villafranca reports.
Douglas County officials on Thursday released information about how an allocated $10 million for school safety will be spent, and a bulk of the funds will be used to enhance the physical security of the buildings.
Gizmodo Earther reports thousands of migratory birds are now dropping dead across the Southwest. In late August, dozens of birds fell from the sky at the White Sands Missile Range and White Sands National Monument, both in southern New Mexico. Since then, Colorado, Texas, Arizona, and Nebraska residents have seen dead creatures scattered along hiking paths, golf courses, and even in driveways. Finches, flycatchers, swallows, warblers, and bluebirds are among the species that have been reported.
Jesse Goins, a gold miner who appeared on "Gold Rush: David Turin's Lost Mine," has died. A spokesperson for the Discovery Channel confirmed to CNN that Goins died in Colorado. According to reports, Goins died after being found unconscious on set by a crew member on Tuesday night. Goins appeared on "Gold Rush: David Turin's Lost Mine," which is part of Discovery's successful "Gold Rush" franchise. He was 60 years old.
Jared Kushner has confirmed he had a 'friendly discussion' about policy with Kanye West in Colorado. CNN reports the senior adviser to President Donald Trump said the conversation wasn't necessarily focused on the rapper's presidential campaign. West was camping in Colorado and flew to Telluride to meet with Kushner and his wife, first daughter and White House senior adviser Ivanka Trump.
Firefighters across three states continue to battle wildfires. The uncontrolled blaze has destroyed more than 60,000 acres in the US West. In Los Angeles County the fire has grown to 10,000 acres and is 0% contained as of Wednesday evening. In neighboring Oregon, the fire has prompted evacuations in Wasco County. Colorado has seen the fire destroy more than 3,200 acres and is 0% contained, according to the US Forest Service.
An escaped convict shot and wounded a rookie Denver police officer in October of 1971. He was caught and convicted in 1973, but escaped from prison again the following year. Newser reports his second escape began a 46-year life on the run, which finally came to an end Wednesday with his arrest in Española, New Mexico. That's where Luis Archuleta had been living under the name Ramon Montoya, at the home he shared with his wife.
