Will Brexit Be Delayed? It's Entirely Possibleby 👨‍💻 Simon Baxendale

Yes – we’re here again – as the UK prepares to leave the European Union, it seems that the process is more than a little bit complicated. In just the past few weeks alone, we have seen UK Prime Minister Theresa May go back and forth with EU officials to try and thrash out a deal that will leave Britain with enough support. However, as there still seems to be divisions in play with regard to May’s initial plans for Brexit even within her own party, things aren’t going perhaps as smoothly many had anticipated.

EU Leaders Cancel November Summit, Cite Lack Of Progress In Negotiations

May has, up until now, advised publicly that she is aiming for Brexit to officially take place as of March 2019. From there, a transition period would begin whereby the UK remains tied to the European Union will begin – with a full departure expected towards the start of 2021. This means that time – of course – is very much ticking.

With things still fairly fraught in negotiations between the UK and the EU at this time in terms of finding a deal that appeases all parties, it has recently been suggested that an extension to the Brexit transition period may be sought. At the time of writing, nothing concrete has been confirmed – however, May has reportedly explored the option to extend transition ‘by a couple of months’ as she advised reporters attending the European Council summit in Brussels this week. This would mean that, if reports are to be believed – that more time could be sought for UK and EU officials to negotiate.

The news may not appeal to those who outright want a ‘hard’ Brexit, as it will mean that barring a lack of representation in the EU, virtually nothing will change with regard to UK-EU ties for even longer. This means that the UK’s stay in the single market and adherence to EU law will continue for a few months more than expected. However, as nothing has been made concrete at the time of writing, we could be dealing with further conjecture.

Brexit is not a simple process by any means – if the past few months of news have told us anything, it’s that removing oneself from the EU is hardly swift and straightforward! Will May get the Brexit deal the UK wants and needs? Will the transition period be extended? Who’s to say – as always, we will keep you posted!
