Is the Next Nokia Phone Set to Change the Smartphone Camera Game for Good?by 👩‍💻 Alice Monroe

When it comes to the biggest names in cellphone technology right now, only a few names are ever likely to pass through your lips. They will likely include Apple, Samsung, Sony, LG or HTC – and in the East, even Huawei – but when it comes to dialling things all the way back to the start of the personal mobile phone boom, you really have to take a look at the likes of Motorola and Nokia to find the original leaders in the game. The latter has recently made a surprise return to the phone game, and what’s even more surprising is what they seem to be looking to do with their next set of devices – to say it could be camera-heavy is putting it very mildly indeed.

ITHome, based in China, took the lead with an apparent leaked image of a Nokia-branded cellphone device with not one, not two, not three – and certainly not four – but five rear camera lenses. The Nokia brand was successfully revived by HMD Global a couple of years ago, and since then, while they’ve been quietly focusing on supplying affordable devices packaged with Android software – as well as a relaunch of their virtually indestructible Nokia 3310, a legend in cellphone history – talk has turned to quite where the firm will be heading next. If these images are to be believed – that is, if they are completely legitimate – shutterbugs could be looking at one of the most advanced camera phones in history. That’s pretty big news.

As Mashable reports, however, there are plenty of reasons to believe that the image put across is legitimate. The picture being distributed looks similar to a patent filed by manufacturer Zeiss, who are partnered with – guess who – Nokia. In addition to this, preliminary sketches of a suggested phone layout emerged earlier on this year – indicating that there may be some weight behind theories that Nokia are about to smash open smartphone camera tech for good.

HMD Global are still aiming for the skies with Nokia, and it therefore wouldn’t be surprising if the brand chooses to launch a model that goes wildly against the grain – in a good way. The tech is entirely possible – Huawei already has three rear cameras clicking away with its P20 Pro – which means, in time, we could be seeing even more incredible camera tech – but who’d have thought Nokia would be behind it all?
