Nintendo Just Announced a Huge New Game for the Switch… and It Caught Plenty of People Off-Guardby 👨‍💻 Graham Pierrepoint

For fans of Nintendo games and their hardware such as the Switch console and the 3DS handheld, ‘Nintendo Direct’ is largely the best place to tune in for news on upcoming games and peripherals. It’s a regular video spot which is uploaded a few times a year to showcase what the firm is working on and what’s in the pipeline. It’s often home to plenty of big news – one of the biggest launches in recent years was the reveal of the Switch outright – though from what some fans are saying, this week’s Nintendo Direct revelations rank up there with some of the very best.

A short teaser trailer – initially featuring characters from Splatoon as a double bluff – revealed that the hugely popular Super Smash Bros line of fighting games will be coming to the Switch console later this year. This is very big news indeed – the game has been a staple of Nintendo consoles dating all the way back to the Nintendo 64 in the late 90s – and with the Wii U and 3DS versions having been crowned by some as ‘game of the year’ upon its initial release, it’s no surprise at all that the Big N wants to recapture the colossal interest in the game for its latest console. Revealing the game now is a very shrewd move – just after the Switch’s first birthday, and after a barnstorming first year of sales.

The latest Nintendo Direct also revealed that popular third party titles such as Crash Bandicoot and Undertale will be making their way to the home console in the months to come, alongside a huge set of expansions for Splatoon 2. This means that 2018 is perhaps set to be an even more exciting year ahead for Nintendo fans – and for those looking to duke it out with the likes of Mario, Yoshi, Link, Kirby, the Splatoon Inklings and many more, news on what’s next for Smash Bros can’t come soon enough. There’s no news yet on whether the Switch title will be a port of the Wii U game or a completely new game in its own right – though many fans are keen to suggest that signs point to the latter. With the last game in the franchise only being four years old – and with stacks of DLC for the title being even younger – will this certainly be the case?
