Is Fifty Shades Freed the Worst Yet? Critics Think Soby

Anyone who has been paying attention to our movie reviews section over the past two years will know that we’ve hardly been enamored with the Fifty Shades of Grey movies – adapted from a series of erotic novels written by EL James, reportedly brought to life from what was initially said to be fan fiction of Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight novels, the books have received considerable critical derision as a result of what has been defined as ‘bad writing’. Beyond this, the movie adaptations have barely mustered up the strength to squeeze past a 25% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes – and if the third and supposedly final instalment is anything to go by, the nadir is yet to come.

Fifty Shades Freed premieres worldwide this week as Valentine’s Day approaches – it’s been an event on February 14th for some time now – and critical opinion is already tearing the latest in the soft core fantasy movie to shreds. At the time of writing, the all-fabled Tomatometer sits at 14%, meaning that 86% of critics pulled thus far really, really did not like what they saw – which is, of course, bad news for anyone looking for a genuinely worthwhile conclusion to the saga of Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele, but possibly good news for anyone looking for yet another pick for ‘bad movie night’. With our own review of Fifty Shades Freed in the pipeline, things are certainly not looking good.

There’s also been surprising critical derision in store for The Cloverfield Paradox, which launched as a complete surprise to Netflix viewers shortly after the Super Bowl. The movie, which comes two years after the incredible 10 Cloverfield Lane and which promises to extend the mythos from its two preceding films even further, is sinking fast with a splat of a Tomatoes rating – as it barely inches past Fifty Shades Freed with a current score of 18%. In happier news, it seems that Peter Rabbit – the Beatrix Potter adaptation which received early derision for its trailers late last year – seems to be doing well with 60% approval at present.

Rotten Tomatoes is always a good source of critical consensus, particularly as it helps to give something of a cross-section of what’s being perceived as good and bad in Hollywood today. For more in the way of movie opinions, stick with One News Page – we’ll have our verdict on both Fifty Shades and the latest in the Cloverfield saga – both threequels – in the coming days! Spare a thought for us in the meantime – we watch them so you don’t have to!
