*Mazzy Star* founder *David Roback* has died, it has been confirmed.

The West Coast songwriter was drawn towards 60s psychedelia as a teen, helping to found groups such as the Rain Parade.

Part of the burgeoning Paisley Underground, he then worked on the SST signed project Opal, its name coined from a Syd Barrett reference.

Opal crumbled when Kendra Smith departed, with David Roback reconvening with Hope Sandoval on vocals.

Mazzy Star's dreamy, slow-paced musicality fused opaque visions of Americana with subtle psych elements, resulting in something absolutely stunning.

Although Hope Sandoval's wistful, half-spoken vocals captured headlines, it was Roback's patient musicality and Baroque flourishes that provided the perfect compliment.

Mazzy Star's final release 'Still' EP came in 2018.
