More Details Emerge About This Latest Avengers Spin-Off – But Are Fans Happy?by 👨‍💻 Graham Pierrepoint

Marvel Studios is hardly taking a breather – not only have they recently unleashed their latest movie, Ant-Man and The Wasp, but they’re busying themselves shuffling their release calendar around for the next couple of years. Reports from various sources suggesting that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 is set to start filming towards the end of the year – and that the title of the next Avengers movie has already been revealed (no spoilers here – go look for it if you’re intrigued!) – seem to suggest that the hype train, at least for the majority of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is far from slowing down.

One character from the Avengers line who hasn’t had much time in the sun is Black Widow, Natasha Romanoff. The stealthy Russian badass, played by Scarlett Johansson, has been part of the Captain America and Avengers line-up from the very early days of the MCU – yet, we’ve never seen her take on her own movie. Some months ago, we reported that there were plans in motion to try and bring Romanoff’s own story to the big screen – and now, this week, it seems that these rumors have finally been cemented into reality.

Cate Shortland, who previously directed Berlin Syndrome, is to take on the director’s chair for the Black Widow movie – and it’s also emerged that the film will be a prequel. This means it will take place before the first Avengers movie – a move which has divided some fans on social media. Many are overjoyed that Romanoff is finally getting her own standalone picture, only the second female-centric picture from the MCU after the forthcoming Captain Marvel – but others aren’t sure about the necessity.

With Marvel’s Kevin Feige having suggested more than once that Captain Marvel and a host of other faces may be taking over as the central ‘face’ of the MCU, the advent of a Black Widow prequel may well serve as something of a final encore for the character – unless, of course, she continues as part of the ‘new’ Avengers or whatever the MCU has lined up for after Avengers 4. There’s plenty of speculation flying around – as per usual – which means that, at least until Avengers 4 has been and gone, we perhaps won’t be any closer to concrete answers about the future of Marvel’s characters on the big screen!
