This Day in History: Amelia Earhart Disappears.

July 2, 1937.

The famous American aviator was attempting to fly around the world with navigator Frederick Noonan.

They were reported missing near the tiny Howland Island in the Pacific Ocean.

Earhart had gained fame as the first woman to conduct a solo trans-Atlantic flight and a solo non-stop flight across the U.S. Just before going missing, Earhart breifly communicated with Coast Guard ship Itasca that she was low on fuel.

No trace of the plane, Earhart or Noonan has ever been found.

Numerous conspiracy theories explaining Earhart's disappearance have circulated for decades
