Take pkg:nearly 4 million indiana residents may be entitled to compensation after equifax's data breach back in 20-17.

Nichole thomas of the better business bureau says although there was a settlement, scammers may still have access to your personal information.

"data breaches in the digital world we live in is just something that we have to live with."

Thomas says just because we live in a digital time, there are still ways to protect yourself from online perpetrators.

"if you think you've been a victim of identity theft, one of the things you can do is change all of your passwords across all of your networks.

Have a two-factor authentication password where you sign in and then they send you a text message or you have to use facial recognition."

Although attorney general curtis hill settled with equifax for 19.5 million dollars, hill says this breach of information was preventable.thomas encourages anyone who may have been a victim to this data breach or identity theft to take steps from oversharing.

Thomas says one of the easiest ways for scammers to get information is through social media."so, when you share things like your pet's name, that's a security question.

If you say it's fido, and now the scammers have got your information and they can potentially use that as a security reset question."
