This week in history: October 23-29by

We’re deep into fall now, and no matter what time of year it may be, there is always something interesting to look back on from decades gone by. This means that, as always, a trip in the One News Page Time Machine is going to be an exciting one. Who knows – something that happens tomorrow could make a future trip of ours that little bit more exciting in the years to come! Strap in and let’s take a look at what occurred down the old memory corridor years ago this week…

October 23rd, 2015 – Adele Breaks More Music Records
The Grammy-scooping Adele continued her domination of pop music records with ‘Hello’ two years ago – the first ever song to be downloaded more than a million times in its first week of release. Part of Adele’s appeal, arguably, is her sparsity in releasing – she takes her time to work on some truly award-winning music.

October 24th, 1929 and 2008 – Stock Market Troubles
In the first ever double whammy for the One News Page Time Machine, two huge catastrophic events for the stock market occurred on or around the exact same day, 79 years apart. In 1929, Black Thursday saw the market start to crash altogether – with Bloody Friday throwing worldwide markets into disarray decades later.

October 25th, 1946 – Nazi War Trials Begin
Trials against Nazi war criminals have never really ended – though many of those responsible for the worst atrocities during World War II will no longer be with us. This week, 71 years ago, retribution for atrocities caused began in Nuremberg, Germany.

October 26th, 1977 – Smallpox Eradicated
It’s not often anyone celebrates the extinction of anything – but it’s 40 years this week that smallpox was last found in anyone – anywhere – thanks to the rise of vaccination, the disease is officially declared eradicated.

October 27th, 1982 – The Billion Boom
With a staggering population currently sitting at just below 1.4 billion, it was 35 years ago this week that China reportedly crossed the initial billionth birth mark – and the population has only been on the increase since.

October 28th, 2001 – ‘Donnie Darko’ Released
One of the most polarizing cult movies of all time – which still has viewers baffled to this day – celebrates its 16th birthday this week, the movie that effectively helped to launch Jake Gyllenhaal as a household name.

October 29th, 2015 – China’s One Child Policy Dropped
Curiously, following on from the above landmark date, this week also sees the anniversary of China dropping its famous ‘one child per family’ policy – after 35 years since the controversial decree was launched.

Join us again next Monday for more timely travels!
