This Week In History: September 25th - October 1stby

History always has a thing or two to teach us. While it may not always be a good lesson, it always finds some way to keep us fascinated. Lucky for us, there’s a chance something of interest has occurred on each and every day of the year – and here at One News Page, we dutifully pick out some of the most interesting historical titbits to have fallen across the ages to share with you again each week. What happened this week in years, decades and even centuries gone by? Let’s take a look.

September 25th, 1789 – The Bill of Rights Proposed
It’s an historical document upon which US law and many a dispute has been started and settled – and it’s of huge constitutional importance. The Bill of Rights celebrates its 228th birthday, of sorts, this week.

September 26th, 1986 – Bobby Ewing’s Controversial ‘Dallas’ Return
It’s widely regarded as one of the biggest and most infamous ‘retcon’ moments of all time – the hugely popular US series Dallas saw one of its main characters, Bobby Ewing (Patrick Duffy) killed off – only for an episode 31 years ago this week to completely undo it all. It turns out, it was all a dream of his wife, Pam – and that an entire season of storylines were thenceforth rewound and forgotten about.

September 27th, 1912 – The First Blues Song Recorded?
The legacy of the blues is well documented – but it’s thought WC Handy’s publication of ‘Memphis Blues’ in September 1912 saw the birth of popular blues – and, at least, the start of its widespread appreciation.

September 28th, 2008 – The First Private Spacecraft Launched
Elon Musk and SpaceX made history nine years ago this week, as their Falcon 1 became the first private spacecraft to be launched into the stratosphere – fuelling the beginning of the future of space tourism.

September 29th, 1996 – The Nintendo 64 Debuts in the US
The game-changing Nintendo 64 – the last console for a long time to use cartridges as opposed to discs – finally found its way to US shores 21 years ago this week, after Japan had already had a chance to play Mario in the third dimension in the summer.

September 30th, 1991 – ‘The Jerry Springer Show’ Debuts
The shock value TV talk (or is that argument) show threw itself onto screens 26 years ago this week – and television, at least in the US, was never quite the same again.

October 1st, 1975 – The ‘Thrilla in Manila’ Bout
One of the most important and most entertaining boxing match-ups of all time saw the legendary Joe Frazier – and the ‘Greatest of All Time’ Muhammad Ali – squared up for a bout that’s still talked about 42 years on. The ‘Thrilla in Manila’ saw Ali clinch the Heavyweight title from Frazier after 15 rounds – helping to cement the former Cassius Clay as boxing’s ultimate icon.

Join us here again next Monday for more journeys to the distant past – who knows what we might dig up?
