This Week In History: August 21st - August 28thby

Get ready to strap back in for another trip back in time – we could be travelling back years, decades or even centuries! There’s always something interesting to uncover during our travels – so let’s see what happened this week throughout history and see if we can learn a thing or two along the way!

August 21st, 1959 – Hawaii Becomes a US State
It was the last territory to become a US state – and it this week celebrates its 58th anniversary as part of America. With Costa Rica having made attempts to join up in recent years, who’s to say whether or not we’ll get a 51st state beyond Hawaii?

August 22nd, 565 AD – First-Ever Sighting of Loch Ness Monster
While it wouldn’t be until the 20th century when the legend of the Loch Ness Monster would truly take shape, the earliest recorded sighting of an alleged beast beneath the water took place this week in 6th century AD.

August 23rd, 2005 – Hurricane Katrina Forms
A storm which would eventually wreak havoc and destruction across Southern US cities, the devastating Hurricane Katrina began to form over the Bahamas this week twelve years ago.

August 24th, 79 AD – Pompeii Buried by Mount Vesuvius
The infamous eruption of Mount Vesuvius saw the destruction and burial of Pompeii and Herculanium almost two millennia ago this week – taking around 15,000 lives with them. To this date, it is an event that is often confused with legend – but it genuinely happened!

August 25th, 1609 – Galileo Reveals the Telescope
The father of astronomy, Italian master polymath Galileo Galilei unveiled his prototype telescope to Venetian powers over 400 years ago this week.

August 26th, 1996 – Clinton Introduces Welfare Reform
In a move to alter US legislation that would be felt for decades to come, US President Bill Clinton made welfare reform part of his legacy back in 1996 – signalling a considerable change from Republican law that had stood for several years prior.

August 27th, 2015 – Final ‘Discworld’ Book Released
The late Sir Terry Pratchett – responsible for the ground-breaking fantasy series Discworld – would sadly not be with us to witness the release of ‘The Shepherd’s Crown’, the sole posthumous release in the series from the writer and the last one in the long-running saga.

Don’t forget to take another trip back in time with us next week – and who knows how far back we’ll go?
