This Week In History: August 14th - August 20thby

If you think about it, there’s always a milestone to look back on each and every day of the year – which makes our trips back and forth in the One News Page time machine all the more interesting! Let’s get ready to hit 88mph and see what happened this week in history – strap in and get comfy, here we go!

August 14th, 1945 – V-J Day
V-J Day, or Victory over Japan Day, marks the anniversary of Japan surrendering to bring an end to World War II – marking the end of an era and the beginning of what many hoped would be peace in our time.

August 15th, 1939 – ‘The Wizard of Oz’ Premieres
Arguably one of the best-loved literary adaptations of all time, L Frank Baum’s fantasy adventure made a star out of Judy Garland and brought a host of characters into popular culture for decades to come – thanks to Hollywood premiering ‘The Wizard of Oz’ on this day 78 years ago.

August 16th, 1977 – Elvis Presley Dies
The King of Rock and Roll – and still regarded as the most prolific hit-maker of all time – Elvis Presley passed away to the shock of billions forty years ago this week. He is being remembered by fans who were around at the time – and those who discovered him long after his passing.

August 17th, 1998 – Clinton admits Lewinsky Affair
It was a scandal that rocked the very top of US politics – unlike those we’re seeing today – as President Bill Clinton admitted that he had undertaken an ‘improper physical relationship’ with Oval Office intern Monica Lewinsky. It would be an affair that would bring up talk of Clinton’s impeachment and removal from office – but he would ride the storm.

August 18th, 1969 – Woodstock Ends
Arguably one of the most important cultural landmarks of the 20th Century, Jimi Hendrix closes off the Woodstock Music and Art Fair.

August 19th, 1993 – Two Toy Giants Merge
The 80s was arguably the decade when toys went big on TV advertising via cartoons and more – and the beginning of the 90s saw two of the biggest names in US toy manufacture, Fisher Price and Mattel, merge together.

August 20th, 2 AD – The Star of Bethlehem Emerges?
The furthest we’ve ever gone back in time – and it’s thought that Jupiter and Venus were spotted converging 2015 years ago this week, providing a potential explanation for the Star of Bethlehem.

Stick around for more time travelling next week!
