British Olympic silver medallist Germaine Mason dies in crashOlympic silver medal-winning British athlete Germaine Mason has died, aged 34, in a motorbike accident in his native Jamaica.

Mason finished runner-up in the high jump at the Beijing Games in 2008, two years after switching allegiance from the country of his birth to Britain, where his father was born.

UK Athletics chief executive Niels de Vos said: “Our staff and colleagues who worked with Germaine are naturally saddened to hear this awful news. Our deepest sympathies go to Germaine’s friends, family and the athletics community at this difficult time.”

Local reports said Mason was riding in convoy with other well known Jamaican sportsmen, including Usain Bolt, fellow sprinter Michael Frater and former Premier League footballer Ricardo Gardner, when he crashed in Kingston early in the morning.

Mason enjoyed success with Jamaica before choosing to compete for Britain, winning bronze at the 2004 World Indoor Championships and setting a national record that still stands.

British Olympic heptathlon gold medallist Jessica Ennis-Hill said: “This is awful. Such sad news.”

Coach Fuzz Caan, who worked with Mason at British Athletics, said: “Germaine was an outstanding athlete and a truly lovely man. He was a great ambassador of British high jumping. It is an honour for us to have him as part of our sporting history.”
